017 The Nystedt Family

Foster Esther - this 'foster' means father's sister. Ester is one my Grandfather Gottfrid Larsson's sisters. Ester married Hugo Nystedt and had two children: Olle & Gun.
-
Solveig's cousin Gun Nystedt playing the piano, ca. 1946
-
"She was probably 10 in this picture. Gun and I were like sisters - she was my best friend when I was growing up. She played classical music on the piano. I would go with her to her lessons and I wished that I could take lessons too but my family was poor and hers was wealthy. I guess in many ways the hardship of being poor made me a stronger person. Her mother always had a very strong influence in what Gun was allowed to do."
-
The Nystedt's lived in Boden and my mother grew up in Niemisel. Gun's brother Olle Nystedt was 12 years older and they remembered him looking handsome in his Swedish military uniform. Father Hugo and son Olle were very fine people and never drank or smoked.

009 NIEMESIL

(I am waiting for a photo of this house.)

This house was the house that my grandmother, Regina Larsson, grew up in with her 6 sisters. Solveig would walk from this house to her friend Iris Rothqvist's house to buy 3 liters of milk. Iris' house was on a large farm. She still owns this farm now. (What is the address?)
-
I remember when Iris came to visit us in Newark, California one winter. She would sit on a chair in the backyard in her bikini enjoying the warm winter sunshine of Northern, California and working on her tan, approx. 1970.
We lived at 19134 Millwood Court, Newark, CA 94560.

008 NIEMESIL: Regina, Gottfrid och Solveig

This picture was probably taken in the summer of 1939 in Ingrid Nilsson's garden in Niemesil. My mother, Solveig Larsson is sitting on my grandfather Gottfrid Larsson's leg. He is wearing a black bow-tie. To the immediate left is my great grandmother Regina Larsson. I believe that the other ladies were of the Nilsson family that owned this home next to the old school house.
-
My mother, Solveig, grew up in this small northern town which is close to the coastal city named LuleƄ (pronounced LU-LEE-O). LuleƄ is about a half hour away by car.
-
When I travelled to Sweden in 1979, I went hiking with Solveig, Iris Rothqvist and her partner Kjell and we hiked up to the top of the Snipen. It was the highest spot in Niemesil. I was 18 at that time and I missed out on an opportunity to see the house my mother grew up in there in Niemesil.
-
I am amazed to see how tan my granfather was.
-
Ingrid's father, Ake lived in the U.S. for 7 years.

This photo shows my grandfather, Gottfrid Larsson, in overalls with the lighter colored shirt and overalls in the middle of the photo. The man to the right is my mother's longtime friend Iris Rothqvist's father and her 2 brothers.

(Get names of Iris' father and brothers)
(What year?)

(Where was this taken?)
(What type of work did my grandfather do?)

003 Solveig, Schoolgirl ca. 1949

Min mor Solveig (Sol-vay) has always loved cats. Here she is shown in front of her Niemesil home in Norrbotten lan, northern Sweden. She told me that the man who drove the snow plough was not to fond of cats and she feared some of her cats didn't enjoy a full nine lives due to his attitude and large plough.

002 Solveig ca. 1966

Swedes are known for taking good care of all that they have. My mother has always had her cherished items. She has some old Danish (or Scandinavian) furniture for over sixty years and it's still nearly spotless.

Here we are at a Christmas circa 1966.
